Two years have gone by since the G12 arrived. Two long years during which the high-end compact market took such leaps forward, that the G12's 720p video, CCD sensor and no movie optical zoom is considered old-fashioned, if not obsolete.

It's still a fine camera, no doubt, but it's also high time that it was replaced.

Enters the G15.

Fully equipped with a new 1/1.7" CMOS sensor and a maximum aperture of f/1.8 at the wide end of its lens, the G15 charges with might. It signifies everything but stagnation - with changes and improvements across the board, not to mention a smaller, lighter body.

That doesn't make it heroine-chic size, but the down scale is still welcome. The cost is the waiving of the G12's articulating LCD screen.

The single most important improvement of the G15 is its maximum aperture settings. If the G12 had mediocre apertures, such as f/2.8-4.5, the G15 brings with it f/1.8 at 28mm up to an oh-my-god f/2.8 at 140mm. These figures are to be tested against potential competition by the recently announced Nikon Coolpix P7700 (compare ) which, in itself has larger aperture settings than its predecessor - f/2 @ 28mm up to f/4 @ 200mm, as well as the Olympus Stylus XZ-2 (compare ) (f/1.8-2.5), the Panasonic Lumix DMC LX7 (compare ) (f/1.4-2.3) and the FujiFilm FinePix X10 (compare ) (f/2-2.8).

The G15's new CMOS sensor, combined with Canon's new Digic V processor mean better low-light support on top of its large max apertures. Also, at last, the no-optical-zoom-720p video of the G12 is history - the G15 provides Full-HD 1080p video with stereo sound and optical zoom. See this comparison between the G12 and G15.

As far as pricing goes, the G15 will start selling for $499.
