Ever since Canon renewed their S compacts, they have been hugely successful in their own right but also by being the most compact high-end cameras available. At the time of the announcement of the latest S, the PowerShot S110 - it's no longer alone in that niche.

On the surface, it seems that the S110 is practically identical to the S100, except perhaps for the disappearing of the small hand grip on its side. Canon traded the S100's built-in GPS for wi-fi connectivity, thus forsaking and old trend in compact cameras and joining the new one. Geo-tagging will still be possible via a connection with a smartphone.

Other than that, however - the S110 is not much different than the S100. It has the same focal lengths of 24-120mm with maximum apertures for f/2.0 @ 24mm and f/5.9 @ 120mm, same body, same sensor size. Not that the S100 was no good, but holding on to a winning formula is just not enough. One must move forward in order to stay in place. By that rationale, it could be that the S110 is a step backwards which will cost you $449.

In today's world, which includes the XF1 (compare ) and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC RX100 (compare ), the S110's dominance of the kingdom of compact high-end cameras is less than certain.
