Nikon has a strong player among the group of Super Zooms. The P100's feature list is hard to beat.

Important Note: the P100 was replaced by the Nikon Coolpix P500 (compare ).

The P100 has everything. Starting with its extra wide angle lens, through its large x26 zoom, and on to its fast image burst rate, Full HD video, electronic viewfinder and flip lcd screen.

Strengths:
Allowing the capturing of both extra wide scenes and far away objects, the range of its 26mm x26 zoom lens is practically unlimited. I find it hard to imagine needs for which the zoom range of this lens would not suffice.
Regarding speed and resolution, the P100 captures a maximum of 10 frames per second in its high speed burst mode, and provides full HD video (1080p).
With both an electronic viewfinder and a flip LCD, you are bound to find your preferred method of photography - be it with your cheek glued to the back of the camera, or with you hands spread above the crowd.

Weaknesses:
When compared to other DSLR-like cameras, one feature stands out in its absence. That is the missing external flash hot-shoe connection. This means you are limited to the camera's internal flash.
Another feature the P100 lacks is RAW support, which is included in some of its competitors feature list.

The Competition
The super zoom group has become crowded since the P100 was first out in the market.
First and foremost, Nikon's own P500 (compare ) has picked the largest zoom range and widest lens titles with its 22.5mm, x36 lens.
Canon's SX30 (compare ) comes in at a close second with its x35 zoom and Fuji's HS20EXR (compare ) has a very decent x30 zoom and more convenient on-lens zoom and focus controls.
From Panasonic, the competition is double, with two concurrent models, the less expensive FZ40 (compare ) and the higher spec'ed FZ100 (compare ). Nikon themselves have an inexpensive alternative to the P100 - the entry level DSLR-like x21 zoom L120 (compare ).

Who is it not for?
If you are looking for a compact camera, the P100 is not for you. If a simple, budget camera is what you want, you should look elsewhere.

Who is it for?
If you need a super zoom with an extra wide lens and a long list of features, this could definitely be the one.
