Setting two firsts - the widest lens on a compact camera - 22.5mm, and the largest zoom range ever - x36, the P500 is a step up in every way from its predecessor, the P100.

It provides full HD 1080 video with a functional optical zoom and stereo sound, a Back Illuminated CMOS sensor, a high resolution flip lcd screen, an electronic viewfinder, an automatic sweep panorama mode, manual controls over exposure and a top shooting speed of 8 frames per second (for up to 5 shots).

Rivaling Canon's SX40 (compare ), Fuji's HS20EXR (compare ) and Panasonic's FZ150 (compare ) for the attention of the amateur photographer looking for the widest lens/largest zoom combo, the P500 seems to take the competition with a knockout.

For more advanced photographers, things aren't as rosy. The first issue is the lack of RAW format support. In today's growing enthusiast market, this compromise is nothing to ignore. The second issue is the absence of an external flash hot shoe.

Like the P500, Canon's SX40 doesn't support RAW. It does, however, have the same 1080p video resolution and adds an external flash hot-shoe. It also has a closely wide 24mm lens and its zoom is a near x35.
The HS20EXR and FZ150 both use CMOS sensors and have a hot shoe and RAW support on top of all the other features and benefits. The P500's advantage over these two models relies solely on its lens.
