Setting new standards in the realm of super-zooms, the new P510 forsakes the P500's widest ever (in compact cameras) 22.5mm in favor of a still very wide 24mm lens, but listen to this - its zoom range is an unheard of x42.
That's a focal length range of 24-1000mm which has never yet been available on any lens of any camera, DSLR's included.

The Coolpix P510 also gets a built-in GPS (although I doubt it takes into account the distance of what you are photographing with the P510's 1000mm lens!), sweep panorama for extra fun and a direct video button for extra convenience and practicality.

It's about 10% heavier than the P500 (compare ), with its 555 grams body (including battery & memory card) and also has roughly 10% better battery life - 240 shots per charge which is still just over half (!) of what its rivals offer.

For example, the Canon PowerShot SX40 (compare ) can take 380 shots per charge, the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ150 (compare ) can take 410 shots, and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC HX200V (compare ) can go on taking 450 shots before draining its battery.

On the bright side, the P510 retains most if its predecessor's features - full HD video with optical zoom and stereo sound, manual control over exposure - for those interested in taking matters into their own hands, an articulating lcd screen for various shooting angles such as over the head or near your feet, an electronic viewfinder for when the sun is too bright for using the lcd, a 1cm macro distance for getting in as close as possible and a direct video button which allows taking alternating images and video without having to switch shooting modes.

So, if you want to have largest available zoom range on a single lens, the P510 will give you just that.
It will also give you a wide variety of features and controls, standing proud even when compared to the competition.

However, if you prefer shooting in RAW like with the FZ150, or would like to avoid having to buy a spare battery for more than a full day's shooting, then you should leave the P510 on the shelf.
