Nikon's contender in the empowered compact zoom department plays a game similiar to Canon's. Does it win? Read on to find out.

Important Note: the S8100 was replaced by the Nikon Coolpix S8200 (compare ).

Take a compact camera, zoom, features and all, and make it slightly better. Enhance image quality in low light conditions, add a fast burst rate and full HD video, and top it off with an image buffer that helps fight the Achilles heel of all compacts - that long time between the shutter press and the actual photo taking. The S8100 is what you get.

Strengths:

The package that the S8100 offers is more than enough for any family, travel and day-to-day photographer.
It features a large x10 zoom, and image quality which is better than most, especially when the lights are dim.
It has full HD (1080) video with optical zoom enabled and stereo sound recording and an extra-ultra-high-resolution lcd screen. A strong point of the S8100 for many is its short shutter lag, compared to other compacts, improving your chances of catching your moving subject where you originally intended it to be.

Weaknesses:

The Nikon Coolpix S8100 is not a high end camera. Don't be confused, it's a step up from all those excellent cameras out there, marked as mid-range.
What it lacks in order to get accepted into high-end society, is a wider lens, a wider maximum aperture, manual controls and better automatic white balance.
As mentioned, its lens starts at a not-so-wide 30mm. As the consensus defines 28mm as the minimum for being declared as 'wide', it misses, but not by much.

The Competition

The classic opponent of the S8100 is Canon's SD4500 (compare ). Both cameras share roughly the same image quality and low light support. They also share a similar imaging sensor, the x10 zoom, the faster than average burst rate and the 1080 HD movie mode.
However, the SD4500 poses a crucial compromise compared to the S8100, as its lens starts at a much narrower 36mm. That fact alone could tip the scales completely for some.

Another worthy competitor is the Sony Cyber-shot DSC HX5 (compare ). It has all those key elements and features mentioned above, plus an extra wide 25mm lens, an even faster 10 frames per second burst mode and a very cool sweep panorama mode. It is definitely worth a look.
If you care less about low light capabilities and more about zoom power in a compact camera, then check out the Canon PowerShot SX210 (compare ).

Who is it not for?

If you are looking for a camera with an extra wide lens, this camera is not for you.
If you want manual controls over exposure, then you should look elsewhere.

Who is it for?

If you are looking for an all-automatic better-than-most compact, you should definitely consider this camera.
If you want a decent compact zoom with high resolution video and a nice image burst rate, then the S8100 certainly fits the bill.
