Sony's HX9V is more than just an improvement of the well balanced HX5. That's what the HX7V was invented for.

In the previous generation of compact cameras (class of 2010), Panasonic's ZS7 and Canon's SX210 were the compact zoom queens, while Sony's HX5 was a slight step up, together with other models based on CMOS sensors such as Nikon's S8100 and Canon's SD4500. Among those models, the HX5 was the only CMOS based compact zoom, which also had a wide angle lens.

As a result of those last three models having somewhat of a smaller zoom range (x10 as opposed to x12-x14), they were overlooked by many. Today, however, most new cameras have switched to CMOS sensors and incorporate wider lenses and larger zooms.

The HX9V provides the same benefits as its competitors - most importantly an extra wide 24mm lens and a x16 zoom - which are the same as the Panasonic Lumix DMC ZS10 (compare ), wider but with a smaller zoom compared to the Nikon Coolpix S9100 (compare ), and wider and with a larger zoom than the Canon PowerShot SX230 (compare ).

All of these leading compact zooms offer Full HD 1080 video with a functional optical zoom and stereo sound. The HX9V, however, is one of the only compact cameras to offer 1080p with 60 fps (aka: 1080/60p), rather than the common 1080/30p or 1080/60i.
On top of that, it is more automatic operation oriented - with a full set of features aimed at getting the cleanest possible shot. In addition, Sony's excellent sweep panorama is a proven joy to use.
